Research

This Foundation anchors its strategy on the notion that only a knowledge-driven approach, steeped in evidence, can effectively and sustainably address the gaps in the capacity of the Press to deliver on its mandate of strengthening democracy. As such, research is central to the work of Naija Times Journalism Foundation.

The Foundation generates data and research-based evidence, which explores the evolving role of journalism in the democratic process. Our knowledge generation examines issues such as press freedom, misinformation, media literacy, public trust and the intersection of journalism with development and governance.

By generating evidence-based insights, the Foundation aims to provide the intellectual resources to enable journalists and media managers to effectively play their roles of holding the government accountable to the people. Naija Times Journalism Foundation research also shapes media practice, informs policy processes and supports journalists and newsrooms in responding to complex emerging realities. Our research outputs and rigorous analysis helps identify gaps in coverage, amplify underreported stories and shape strategies for more inclusive, ethical and effective journalism across Nigeria, Africa and Black Diaspora.

Supporting Data-Driven Investigative Development Reporting

In a governance system fraught with impunity and unbridled corruption, the role of investigative journalism in exposing wrongdoing and promoting accountability is as critical as ever. The Foundation generates resources to support cross platform collaborations and synergies in investigating deep-seated issues at the heart of democratic governance, including the effectiveness of government policies and programs, the level of inclusiveness of poverty reduction efforts, local governance, infrastructure, mitigating effects of corruption on governance processes, the electoral process and popular participation.

Consequently, one of the key initiatives of the Naija Times Journalism Foundation is to promote development journalism that puts people at the heart of the story. We believe journalism should do more than report events; it should explore the deeper issues shaping our society and highlight both the challenges and efforts being made to address them. Through this initiative, we support journalists from diverse platforms to cover topics like education, health, governance, climate and livelihood with depth, clarity and purpose. Our goal is to encourage reporting that not only informs but also spark conversation, accountability and real progress in communities across Nigeria and beyond.

Policy and Advocacy

Policy and Advocacy play a key role in our efforts to foster a supportive environment for independent and impactful journalism. The Foundation actively engages with policymakers, media stakeholders and civil society groups to advocate for legal and institutional reforms that protect press freedom and enhance journalistic integrity.

Our work focuses on championing open access to information, defending the rights of journalists and encouraging policies that ensure media organisations can operate sustainably and ethically. Through public campaigns, dialogue and evidence-based research, we aim to shape conversations around media regulation, digital rights and civic transparency. These efforts reflect our broader commitment to strengthening democracy by ensuring the media remains a powerful and protected voice for the public interest.

Institutional Support

Naija Times Journalism foundation offers strategic institutional support to media organisations, journalism schools and civil society groups dedicated to advancing excellence in journalism and fostering media innovation. Through targeted initiatives such as mentorship, technical assistance and advisory services, the Foundation strengthens organisational capacity, enhances operational effectiveness and promotes long-term sustainability within the media and civic ecosystem.

Training and Mentoring

Naija Times Journalism Foundation believes the quality of media reporting is directly proportional to the training and mentoring of journalists. As such, we work with professional bodies to mentor journalists, including youth, marginalised women and people with disabilities to focus on thematic issues affecting their respective demographics, thereby connecting reportage to key governance processes.

Partnerships

It is a critical pillar of Naija Times Journalism Foundation’s strategy to advance journalism. The Foundation actively seeks collaborations with media houses, journalism schools, civil society organisations, academic institutions and development agencies to amplify the reach and impact of its works.

Through these partnerships, the Foundation facilitates knowledge exchange, joint research, co-creation of training programs and cross-sector advocacy initiatives. By leveraging shared resources and expertise, these collaborations enhance the capacity of journalists, promote media innovation and drive evidence-based storytelling that informs policy and empowers communities.
